Oscar-winning script writer Ronald Harwood to adapt play for Headline Pictures

Headline Pictures is pleased to announce that Oscar-winning script writer Ronald Harwood has agreed to adapt his play QUARTET into a feature film for Headline Pictures, developed with finance from BBC Films.

Cecily, Reggie and Wilfred are in a home for retired opera singers. Every year, on October 10, there is a concert to celebrate Verdi's birthday and they take part. Jean, who used to be married to Reggie, arrives at the home and disrupts their equilibrium. She still acts like a diva, but she refuses to sing. Still, the show must go on... And it does.

QUARTET is funny, touching and poignant by turns and comes to a grand climax, a triumph with the four of them reliving their lost performances.

Playwright and novelist Ronald Harwood won - among others - the 2003 Academy Award for the screenplay of The Pianist, directed by Roman Polanski, and was nominated for the Academy Award for the screenplay of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly in 2008.

Mark Shivas, Producer/Headline Pictures says:

'I'm a lucky man to have been asked to produce 'Quartet'. It's a long time since our first association and these days Ronnie is at the very top of his game. There is no more civilised, clever and successful writer one could be working with.’

Stewart Mackinnon, Producer/Headline Pictures says:

‘This is a story about life-long friendships and rivalries between four wilful but gifted people who finally join together and surprise themselves by creating something very special At times sad, but mostly funny this life-enhancing film will touch and involve audiences everywhere.’
